Streaming gives students the chance to experiment and find out what their favorite or least favorite genre is, what movies or TV shows they can’t stop watching, and what to avoid.
In recent years, streaming movies has been increasingly popular with the average consumption of 50 movies per year amongst young teens according to commonsensemedia.org.
“My favorite TV show is Lego Ninjago. […] I really relate to Jay because he always panics as the first move in any situation,” said sophomore Yeju K., via text message.
What people watch in TV shows or movies often reflects what they want to see in themselves or a reflection of their current lives, according to psychologytoday.com.
“I watch a lot of comedies and fantasy shows, I like the freedom they have in the shows,” said sophomore Meadow S.
Watching what isn’t reality is often used as an escape from the human world, with the popularity of fantasy movies and shows boosting significantly with a 36.2% increase in teens according to newsroom.ucla.edu.
Horror movies are not for everyone. People stray away from this genre because they dislike the settings, which increases stress and anxiety according to nuvancehealth.org.
“My least favorite genre is horror, because it is too scary,” said sophomore Carly S.
Instead people might move towards more positive happy movies to lighten the mood.
“I would recommend watching Disney movies such as ‘Rapunzel’ because it is a good starter movie,” said Carly.
Disney movies and TV shows are classic starters as they are very engaging and entertaining.
“I would say, if I lined up all my favorite shows and movies, I can probably find a lot of characteristics about my personality from what the characters in the shows, just because I watch them so much,” said Meadow.
Seeing characters in TV shows and movies that one may think are cool or relatable, can sometimes influence what one says or does on a daily basis, according to medium.com.
What people watch often is a reflection of their preferences and sometimes what they see in themselves. Being able to watch and see multiple genres allows people to find what their favorite genre is and of others.
