Senior Casey Colombo and Junior Ava Khan have been named into the top 100 for their volleyball skills and contributions.
Last year, Colombo had 59 digs, 48 kills (points won) and 17 aces, and Khan had 163 digs, 24 aces, and 20 assists, according to Newsday.
“Both Khan and Colombo are hard-working athletes, they are leaders on and off the court, they do everything that is asked of them and more. Both well deserving… and I’m glad they got that recognition,” said head coach Matthew Carrino.
The athletes would agree, “It’s like our hard work really paid off.” said Colombo. “It’s really great to see our hard work being recognized,” said Khan.
Coach Carrino appreciates their commitment to the team.
“They help a lot. I bounce ideas off them and they come to me with ideas. They’ve been very helpful with that. I lean on them for a lot of stuff. I couldn’t ask for two… great captains,” said Carrino.
Colombo and Khan started playing volleyball during 6th grade and 4th grade respectively, and know that maintaining this elite level takes time and dedication.
“Practicing with the team, everyone works hard and pushes each other,” said Khan.
Their love of the game runs deep on and off the court.
“I love hanging out with my friends and meeting new people through club [volleyball],” said Colombo.
Khan’s favorite part is, “Playing, the adrenaline of rallies is really fun,”
Although these two are in the top 100, their hearts are all about the team and working together.
“[I’m] looking forward to getting more time with this team,” said Colombo.
The team has a strong bond and connection with one another.
“I love our team and playing together,” said Khan.
Coach Carrino couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls.
“With those two on the court anything is possible,” said Carrino. ◼️
