Taylor Swift released a new album titled “Life of a Showgirl” on October 3, 2025 which embodies her reflections of her artistic journey while celebrating her engagement to Travis Kelce.
After the announcement of Taylor Swift’s newest album, excitement and expectations buzzed within the fan community. “Life of a Showgirl” was anticipated to be a somewhat heartfelt album, similar to past albums as fans of Taylor Swift love her lyricism, storytelling and instrumentals. Although unexpected, they enjoyed how upbeat and fun the album was, representing how happy Taylor Swift had become. Others who consistently appreciate her music were disappointed by this album, believing it fell short of what they usually expect of her.
“I feel like people expect so much coming from her and this album was not lyrically her best and people were very disappointed by that,” said freshman Charlotte L.
The biggest criticism towards the album was how different it was from her other albums, for better and for worse. Many believe that “Life of a Showgirl” simply wasn’t as good as her other albums, especially when compared to lyrically appreciated albums such as “Folklore” and “Evermore”. In those albums, fans connected to the stories with profound emotion and depth, finding them relatable and familiar. Even “Red” and “1989”, although considered more energetic albums, still provided this experience for listeners. Fans dislike the lack of emotional depth the songs in this newest album have on the surface, and criticize the lyrics.
“There is such a big contrast, it just sounds like it wasn’t Taylor who wrote it,” said junior Kaitlyn S.
Fans consider this album to be very bold in its impression and energy, not just due to the songs themselves, but because of promotion. Taylor Swift has advertised this album in many creative ways, such as offering fans the opportunity to sing along to the new songs in theaters while watching “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl”. It provided an amazing experience for those who never got the chance to see her perform live.
“It was definitely out of her element in how it was promoted,” said junior Natalie P.
Many listeners are finding that, on the surface, “Life of a Showgirl” is not enjoyable, but since the album’s release, Taylor Swift fans have been searching the songs for connections and diving deeper into the lyrics. Compared to their first listen, love for the album has seemed to increase drastically as people once again fall in love with Taylor’s lyricism, storytelling, and factors unique to this album.
“The more I listened, the more I understood the message she was trying to portray with the songs,” said Natalie.
As time passes, “Life of a Showgirl” becomes more of a beloved album every day. It becomes a perfect listening experience for those who enjoy catchy and light lyrics and a strong melody suited for dancing. ◼️
