Just when students thought February break had come to an end, celebration echoed from group chats as the news of not just one, but two consecutive snow days were announced.
Due to the state of emergency in Suffolk County, one of the two days off from school was not counted in the school district’s maximum of four snow days.
“New Yorkers are no strangers to snow and cold weather, but these blizzard-like conditions approaching New York City, Long Island and the lower Mid-Hudson will bring heavy snow and strong winds, with the storm forecasted to impact much of our state,” said governor of New York Kathy Hochul in a press release on February 21 2026.
After the winter storm moved through the area, students reacted quickly to the unexpected days off.
“I found out about the first snow day while I was at a luncheon, my cousin showed me the post on the district’s Instagram page and I was very happy,” said sophomore Melina A, via text message.
This extended break gave students more time to continue the hobbies they love to do and refresh.
“I mainly watched movies and read since I’m not a big fan of playing in the snow. It’s always nice to have the day off,” said Melina.
Being six months into the school year, burnout is common among students. Many described the extended break as a much needed reset.
“During the break I was able to refresh, recollect, and start a new page before going back to school,” said sophomore Ekin C.
Students turned off their alarm clocks when they heard the news.
“As soon as I heard we had additional days off, I immediately turned off my alarms [and] was thrilled about spending time with my family playing in the snow,” said Ekin.
Though it is rare for the district to have two snow days in a row, students argue that it was appropriate to give another day off.
“Personally, with the snow we got on [Wednesday] morning, I believe we should’ve either had a remote day or a two hour delay, especially since one third of the buses were late,” said Melina.
The two consecutive snow days were the cherry on top for students’ February break. Remote learning could be utilized after five snow days are taken.
