Senior Julia Gordon has continually proved her passion and commitment through her work in the music department and her involvement as a Student Life Treasurer.
As the treasurer of Student Life, Gordon handles all the finances and ensures that all the events and activities are running smoothly. She joined Student Life because she was a natural born leader and desired to change a few misconceptions.
“The thing I’m most proud of is the fact that I was able to prove that the kids who do the musical at CHS can be involved more at school. Originally, there was a rule that kids who participated in the musical couldn’t run for Student Life and I wanted to change that,” said Gordon.
Gordon truly enjoys being a part of Student Life as she’s able to come up with activities and events that enable all Commack students to get involved. She recently arranged Battle of the Classes for the special education classes, which made it possible for more students to get involved.
“The one that stuck with me the most was when we hosted a Battle of the Classes for the special education classes last June. There was something so heartwarming about watching these kids get to participate in a school event just for them,” said Julia.
Gordon brings positive energy all around her, which attracts more people to the events Student Life hosts.
“Julia has one of these very bubbly types of personality which attract different people into our events that might not have normally participated. One of the responsibilities of Student Life officers is to get in front of a microphone and be able to not only speak to the audience, but keep their attention. Sometimes we will ask her to speak at an event without much preparation and she has no problem going in front of the audience, [getting] the message across to them and fielding questions from them as well,” said Dr. Michael Jeziorski, Student Life adviser.
Not only is Gordon, involved in Student Life but she also plays a big role in the music department. Gordon takes part in the school’s musicals and other musical events. Her first school musical was “Into the Woods” in 2023, and one of her most popular musicals was “Pippin” in 2025.”Pippin” led her to win the Newsday National Merit Scholarship for Music Performance 2024-2025. She aspires to do musical theatre for the rest of her life because she wants to use her gift, grow, and improve. She is also in various ICA ensembles in the school.
“My end goal is to continue doing theater for the rest of my life. I think over the past four years, I realized that there’s nothing else I really want to do with my life besides musical theater. Getting any opportunity to perform is such a gift and since I’m majoring in musical theater, I get to continue performing for the rest of my life. I hope that over the next four years I can grow my technique and as a leader,” said Gordon.
Gordon has learned many important lessons by being a part of numerous productions, one of which was the importance of working as a team and supporting each other. She has the same mindset when it comes to handling her job in Student Life.
“I learned the importance of having a united cast. A production is only as strong as the relationships between the cast members, in Student Life it’s a very collaborative environment. Each one of us always has our own opinion or idea and everybody else is eager to listen,” said Gordon.
Gordon’s biggest takeaway from being a part of chorus, theatre, and Student Life is that she learned how to communicate with others and to appreciate the people around her. Through the music that she sings, and the speeches she gives to the audience, she has always pushed the limits with her tight schedule and is more open minded towards others’ experiences.
“Singing in choir has allowed me to listen and blend as a group rather than a soloist. Theater has taught me to push boundaries, express emotion, and put myself in one situation from different perspectives. Everyone on the Student Life board has their own separate commitments as well and seeing how each of us deal with it is so interesting,” said Gordon.
Gordon is grateful for the people who are around her and support her. She values all the people who come and support her during her shows and her family, who has been with her through everything.
“They support me through everything. Every performance, they are standing in the audience cheering for me louder than anybody else in the theater. I love them and they are really the most important thing in my life,” said Gordon.
Gordon has never given up on her dream to be an actress and wants others to do the same too. No matter what, she wants to keep performing for the rest of her life.
“I just hope anybody reading this knows that your dreams aren’t impossible. When I was little, I wanted to be an actress and now that I’m getting to actually do it I am so grateful. So please don’t throw away your dreams just because you don’t think you won’t be successful. I know I’ll be broke[…] but nothing excites me more than knowing that I get to perform for the rest of my life,” said Gordon. ◼️
