Changes in layout, seating, and colors made for a whole new cafeteria transformation for students’ relaxation.
“In the post Covid era, the high school was given a grant to be able to redo the cafeteria as well as the serving line,” said vice principal Matthew Keltos.
When the news of the grant made its way to the Commack administrators, their focus immediately went to a possible revamp of the cafeteria, which could now be funded.
A possible issue could arise as the project was racing against time. With summer coming to an end and students preparing to pile back into the building, a place to eat was essential. The cafeteria had to be up and running by September 5.
“In regards to importance, it was to make sure that it was ready for the start of school,” said Keltos.
The cafeteria was, in fact, ready for the 2023-2024 school year, reaching, not only the goal regarding time, but creating the atmosphere that was the focus of the project.
“We wanted something that wasn’t like the old institutionalized [model],” said Keltos.
This new ‘college feel’ of the cafeteria has sparked many opinions within the student body.
“The colors, the high top tables, and booths, I think, in a high school, you just need some chairs and a table,” said senior Thomas G.
Although there might be trouble with change or some loss of the nostalgia factor regarding the simplicity of the previous model, there are preferences that were met within the student body.
“I like the new atmosphere. It feels cleaner and definitely more modern,” said senior Loren G.🔳
