The Earth’s average yearly temperatures have been increasing rapidly over the past decade. This has major impacts on many aspects of life such as natural disasters, food, water, and even health.
“In order for this to be a habitable planet, we need greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and water vapor. But what humans have done is they re-released captured carbon by burning fossil fuels, and that has increased the temperature of the planet,” said Environmental Action Club adviser Jeanne Suttie.
Global temperatures are on track to rise by 4.5°F to 8°F by 2100, according to NASA.
There are many ways students can help lower these numbers. Actions as simple as carpooling on the way to practice, using a reusable water bottle, or putting on a sweater instead of turning up the heat can make a difference.
“There’s nothing too small. Every bottle in the landfill is just another bottle [that is] going to keep piling up, and it could be something that an animal in the ocean eats, or an animal who is roaming around the landfill eats,” said sophomore Bianca A.
Many students have found ways to lower their harmful impact on the environment as well.
“I aim to recycle plastic bottles around my house and shift towards using more renewable products,” said freshman Prisha C.
These small parts of the day will lead to a lower carbon footprint, positively impacting the environment.
“I use reusable bottles instead of plastic bottles, because I don’t think people realize how bad plastic bottles are. They just contribute so much to plastic pollution,” said Bianca.
The Environmental Action Club meets throughout the year on Wednesdays.
