Attending Syracuse University
Honesty is the best policy in journalism, and sometimes the things we can’t bear to hear are what we need to hear most. This is the motto that has fueled my passion for journalism since the very beginning.
Ever since my English teacher in 11th grade recommended The Courant to me, I knew this was everything I was looking for. It allowed me to share my beliefs through writing to people willing to listen, and for that, I will be forever grateful.
If someone had told me five years ago I would be committed to Syracuse University studying Journalism at Newhouse, I would have laughed in their face. However, exceeding many of my own personal expectations and limits, here I am. I always had a passion for the art of writing and expressing my words. I love to write songs, and read books, and being able to transfer that passion into journalism within The Courant has been nothing short of gratifying.
I have learned so much from my time in The Courant in areas such as grammar, reporting, and structure, and it has shaped me into who I am today. If not for The Courant, I can’t say for certain if journalism is the path I would’ve taken in the future. Getting to experience the way The Courant has helped get my voice out there, and it only fuels my motivation to get others’ voices out there through my words.
Although I am shifting towards the broadcast realm of journalism, I can’t wait to showcase my abilities, which The Courant has gifted me with. I recall the excitement and anticipation of my first interview with a sense of longing, but also pride. If only I could see that version of myself, how successful she would become. I would go on to write a total of five amazing stories and even get recognized by some faculty at the high school. The honor and self-respect I would gain from that recognition is a feeling that will continue to motivate me through any future challenges I face.
I would like to thank Mrs. Vogt for always believing in me and pushing me to be the best version of myself always. If not for you, my journey in The Courant would have never started. I will miss talking about all things Islanders and hockey with you. To Mrs. Ramirez, thank you for making my day a little brighter every time I stepped foot in your classroom. You never failed to welcome me with open arms and put a smile on my face when I needed it most. When coming to school felt like a challenge, you were the teachers who made me want to show up.
To Dr. Jeziorski and Mr. Patterson, I will forever be thankful for the impact you have had on my senior year, and I’ll be sure to carry your advice wherever I go next. I’ll always treasure the memories and laughs we shared together.
To my Student Life Family, thank you for being the absolute best part of my high school journey. It’s been such a joy (and a little bit of chaos) building something meaningful with a group as fun, passionate, and unforgettable as you all. I’m so proud of what we’ve done together, and even more grateful for the laughs, late nights, and memories. I’ll miss you all more than words can say.
Lastly, to The Courant. Thank you for sparking my love for writing and getting me more involved in the community. And to Mrs. Semple, you’re the reason I got to be part of it all. I’m so grateful for your support and for always having my back. I’ll definitely be checking the site to see all the awesome stories from future writers, and I can’t wait to see how it keeps growing!◼️
