Senior students soon are going to embark on their next stage of life. Entering the new world of freedom and independence is the next step of life when being introduced to college. New challenges such as finding a purpose in life are endured when stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
“It feels as if I were just a freshman entering high school, but somehow I’m a senior about to leave my hometown,” said senior Maria O.
Spending life in high school with guidance and support from family and friends, to entering an unknown future, can exhilarate fears within many students.
“I see a lot of anxiety and students struggling with requirements needed to get to college and when arrived at college how to navigate the whole college world,” said social worker Ashley Diaz.
Seniors are required to complete the Common Application consisting of various tasks surrounding academics and extracurricular activities, creating a lengthy time consumption process in order to apply to college.
“Take a deep breath and communicate with counselors and if you don’t understand take notes and ask for help,” said Diaz.
Understanding that college is not for everyone is an important realization. Students may pursue the next chapters of their lives differently. Making thoughtful decisions instead of following traditional paths is ideal.
“Home is always going to be home, college is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but if you aren’t ready that’s totally okay and take the time needed,” said Diaz.
Navigating how to stay present while preparing for the mental shift of entering the next years of life can be tricky, however maintaining a healthy balance is important.
“I am very excited for the future but senior year is an amazing experience I will never get back, so I am trying to stay present and not rush it,” said Maria O.
Creating a healthy balance by not allowing the college processes to steal focus from the present is essential. Mentally shifting into a positive mindset about the future can relieve stress.◼️
