Throughout the past few months, the creative team of “Mamma Mia” has worked tirelessly following the successful completion of “Into the Woods” and “Anastasia” in previous years. Performed on March 22 and 23, there is no doubt that Mamma Mia was a musical to remember.
Young actors and actresses join theater for various reasons. Whether it be due to their friends, the music, older siblings, or famous role models, most thespians do not regret their decisions.
“When I first came to Commack High School, I was worried about having a friend group, but joining these productions has helped me with that […] and I love these people so much,” said freshman Derek H., (Eddie).
Making connections and building relationships is the most important part of the theater world. It becomes quite easy when spending more than ten hours a day with the rest of the cast, pit, and crew.
“I see everyone (the cast, pit, and crew) more than I see my own family,” said junior Vanessa S., (Tanya).
Many times, long nights during tech week are the memories that stick with these high schoolers for the rest of their lives. Alongside the social component, many also participate because they love the musical that was selected.
For those unfamiliar with Mamma Mia, the story follows a single mother named Donna and her daughter, Sophie. Awaiting her big wedding day, Sophie tries to fulfill her dream of getting walked down the aisle by her unknown father, so she invites three candidates who may be that man. The popular story is filled with laughs, cries, and popular music by ABBA.
“I was so excited to find out that my senior show would be Mamma Mia, because it is one of my favorite musicals. The music, characters, and dances are so much fun, and I’m so excited to perform it,” said senior Dara G., (Donna).
There are so many ways to be involved in school productions, by acting, dancing, playing an instrument, working the lights, moving sets, and more.
“No matter your interest, there’s a position for you in this production. Between stage crew, acting, dancing, lighting, marketing, sound, art, and set, there’s a spot for everyone,” said production photographer, social media manager and junior, Max L.
No matter the personality and identity, the theater department has always been a welcoming and friendly community. The plays and shows bring so many different types of people together, who wind up becoming a family.
Many of the school’s very own thespians pursue a life in performing arts. While the field may be challenging and competitive, there are bright and hopeful futures for those in these occupations.
“I would like to thank the production team and my castmates for building my love for theater,” said senior Aayan K., (Harry).
Participation inside and outside of school have fostered a love for the performing arts in these young actors. The theater department has so much opportunity and enthusiasm. Congratulations to the cast, pit, and crew involved with Mamma Mia on another successful musical. ◼️
