The Peer Leadership Advisory Network [PLAN] is a group of handpicked juniors and seniors who meet with the freshman class once every quarter to mentor and share advice with those that are less experienced with the school.
“The idea of fostering young mentors definitely is something I believe in,” said club adviser Megan Moy.
Moy has dedicated ten years to this club, previously with Margaret Krone, and currently with Erin Mascaro. The advisers meet with the upperclassmen before each mentor session that takes place with the freshman. Moy and Mascaro ensure that with each session, their mentors are prepared to inform the freshmen of upcoming events. Being members of the club not only helps boost the freshman class’ involvement, it allows the mentors to establish new qualities within themselves.
“In a nutshell, the goal of the club is to help our upperclassmen develop the skills needed to foster these mentoring sessions, to foster the leadership within themselves.” said Moy
When senior members graduate, they are capable of starting their lives with new knowledge and leadership abilities. The club doesn’t only benefit its members, but the freshman class as well.
“I remember asking [mentors] about places in the building and best routes to take.” said sophomore Jake D.
The high school is a fairly large building. Sessions with mentors allow students to learn about shortcuts through the school, as well as academic guidance.
“I remember [mentors] helping me with how long to study and how to prepare for midterms,” said Jake.
Freshman year is a high school student’s first time experiencing midterm week. The members of the club can provide advice such as preparation and testing protocols.
“I love knowing that I’ve helped students, especially since I was a freshman once just like them,” said senior member, Morgan V.
P.L.A.N. is an opportunity to provide the help that one may wish they had during the start of their high school experience and an opportunity for seniors to end their experience knowing that they prevented the minor struggles that they once were met with. It’s a cycle of wisdom that gets passed down year by year and a uniquely beneficial resource to all.◼️
