Senior Sienna O. started her basketball journey at the age of eight and moved to the district this year.
For three years of Sienna’s high school career, she played at Christ the King and had overcome many obstacles in her own basketball career. During freshman year, her parents had moved to Commack during the Covid Pandemic. During her sophomore year, she tore her ACL and had to sit out for a whole year and endure physical therapy.
“She brings […] a lot of energy to the team, she’s always positive. When people are in bad spirits, bad how their playing. […] She’s always picking people up and really good player too,” said senior Sofia V.
Even though she is new to the team, she fit in easily and has adapted progressively with the team. She also motivates her teammates and brings up the energy when her teammates need it most.
“Being comfortable with everybody on the team, I think that’s how she is really starting to flourish[…] because she is one of the best teammates on the team too[…] I’ve only really seen her for year and she’s pretty tremendous,” said varsity girls basketball Coach David Moran.
In eighth grade she had the great opportunity to work with Nike and the WNBA with a program called “Game Goers” a project that inspires young girls to play sports. The company had flown her out to Beaverton, Oregon to participate in the project with 50 girls from all over the country. The purpose of the program was to re-introduce sports to girls between the ages of 12-15.
“Without my parents and without my friends, I don’t think I’d be who I am today,” said Sienna.
Sports broadcasting and journalism are two options Sienna would like to explore for possible future career choices. She had gained interest due to her work with the “Game Goers” project which influenced her in wanting to have something to do with sports broadcasting and journalism.
Sienna has done a lot more in her life than a normal teenager has done and when asked the question of what is one goal to have in the future.
“I want to be an advocate for young girls in sports,” said Sienna.◼️
